Benefit sharing

The agreed distribution of project revenues or non-monetary benefits to communities and rights holders.

Benefit sharing defines who receives what from a carbon project. Agreements typically specify the share of revenue, the timing of payments, the entity receiving them, and the process for deciding how funds are used.

The design question is harder than the arithmetic. A community fund controlled by an outside organisation may satisfy a percentage requirement while delivering little agency. Clear governance, published allocations and independent oversight are what distinguish a functioning arrangement.

Disclosure of benefit-sharing terms is increasingly expected by buyers and regulators, because a project that generates credits while leaving local people worse off is a sustainability risk regardless of its carbon performance.

Frequently asked questions

Is benefit sharing always monetary?

No. It often includes employment, infrastructure, training, tenure security or agreed access rights.

Who decides how community funds are used?

Ideally the community itself, through documented governance rather than an external intermediary.
