Debt-for-nature swap

An arrangement that restructures sovereign debt in exchange for commitments to fund conservation.

In a swap, a creditor accepts a reduced or restructured claim while the debtor commits domestic resources to agreed conservation outcomes, often through a local fund.

The appeal is that it converts debt service into environmental spending without new aid. The risks are that commitments may not be met, and that the arrangement can be fiscally complex relative to the environmental gain.

Frequently asked questions

Does it generate carbon credits?

Not directly. It funds conservation, which may later underpin crediting but is not itself a credit transaction.

Who typically participates?

Sovereign creditors, conservation organisations and multilateral institutions.
