Remote Sensing

VIIRS

A newer moderate-resolution sensor suite whose fire products detect smaller and cooler burns than earlier systems.

VIIRS succeeded MODIS for operational fire monitoring, offering finer spatial detail and improved detection of small or low-intensity fires at night.

In project monitoring it strengthens fire risk assessment and supports rapid response, since detection of a small burn early is far cheaper than discovering a large one late.

Frequently asked questions

Does VIIRS replace MODIS entirely?

Not yet. The two are used together so that historical continuity is preserved.

Are VIIRS hotspots confirmed fires?

No. Detections are indications that require interpretation, since industrial heat sources also register.
